June 6, 2011

Fisher Hog Farms, a pork production operation near Middletown, Mo., has received the first-ever 2011 Missouri Environmental Steward Award. Sponsored by the Missouri Pork Assn., the honor recognizes a Missouri pork producing operation that has demonstrated the greatest commitment to safeguarding the environment and its surrounding communities.

The farm uses the Pro-Act Biotech microbial treatment systems to manage manure in its pull plug barns, deep pit barns and a lagoon. Applicants for the award were judged on manure management systems, soil and water conservation practices, reduction of odors/improvement of air quality, wildlife management practices and community outreach.

The farm is now in the running for the National Environmental Steward Award sponsored annually by The Pork Checkoff and the National Hog Farmer magazine. The award will be announced on Sept. 15, 2011.
