Water officials will gather for the event at the AWWA convention in Washington, D.C., next week

More than 400 people in the water industry will be attending a fundraising gala reception for Water For People in Washington, D.C. Hosted by the Water For People Committee, the gala reception will take place on Monday, June 13, during the AWWA Annual Convention and Exhibition.

Water For People works in 11 countries where a sip of water could have dire consequences.

Thanks to their efforts, villages in those countries can create locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and hygiene education programs, so that fewer and fewer people will suffer from waterborne diseases.

The site of this charity reception will be the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Attendees will enjoy live Andean and Bolivian music and appetizers inspired by cuisine typically served in Water For People’s service areas: Latin America, Africa and India. There will also be an open bar and an opportunity to enter into a random drawing for numerous prizes, including a one-week stay at the Marriott Ko-Olina Resort and Beach Club in Hawaii.

The theme of the Gala is Women in Water, to recognize the accomplishments of women and girls from around the world who endeavor to secure water for their communities, often at the expense of education and work.

DC Water General Manager George Hawkins will make welcoming remarks at the VIP reception. During the main reception, with U.S. Ambassador Hattie Babbitt as the master of ceremonies, guests will hear from U.S. Undersecretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero, as well as Elisa Speranza, Water For People board chair.
