Veolia Awarded Portions of Produced Water Treatment System

April 14, 2011
System by Southern Pacific Resource Corp. for STP-McKay Thermal Project

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has been awarded the supply of key portions of the produced water treatment system by Southern Pacific Resource Corp. for its STP-McKay Thermal Project in Northern Alberta, Canada. Southern Pacific, as with all of their oil sands assets, will employ in-situ recovery methods for this project.

The produced water from oilfield operations will be treated with Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies’ AutoFlot Induced Gas Flotation technology as the initial de-oiling step. Following initial treatment, an HPD evaporation system will treat the de-oiled produced water from the 12,000-bbl/d operation. The treated water from the process will serve as feed for the drum- type boilers to generate steam for the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) process.

The evaporator system will employ the proprietary Silica Sorption process that operates at a lower pH. Operating at a lower pH allows flexible disposal options of the resulting waste brines while producing high-quality distillate for re-use. An additional crystallizer will be used to further reduce waste volumes, achieve higher water recovery, and approach ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge). This is the second SAGD produced water evaporation system using this second-generation evaporator technology awarded to Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies in Northern Alberta in the past six months.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, as part of the project award, will also supply a source water treatment facility that will treat raw water for additional use in the plant. The resulting waste stream will be fed into the produced water treatment system, thereby minimizing waste from the process.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies’ technical subsidiaries, Whittier Filtration, HPD, and Crown solutions, will provide the de-oiling technology, evaporation system and the source water treatment plant respectively. Southern Pacific Resource Corp. is engaged in the exploration, development and production of in-situ thermal heavy oil and bitumen production in the Athabasca oil sands of Alberta and in Senlac, Saskatchewan, Canada.
