Dubuque, Iowa, Recognized for Drinking Water System Innovations

March 22, 2011
EPA recognized city for new metering initiative

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) yesterday recognized the city of Dubuque, Iowa, with the 2010 Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund Award for Sustainable Public Health Protection.

The city of Dubuque is in the midst of an innovative water meter replacement project which will allow its water customers to identify water waste and consider corrective measures. This project will translate into “smarter” water use and increased energy savings. More efficient water use also will reduce the use of both the energy and chemicals the city must use to treat and deliver water.

Dubuque is replacing approximately 22,500 water meters with new meters that will increase metering accuracy and feature automated meter reading abilities. This new system will create an annual savings of more than $144,000 through the elimination of manual monthly meter reads.
