Oldcastle Precast Makes Pipes and Fittings for Highway Sewer Project

I-95 project includes new water, sewer and gas mains in Philadelphia

Oldcastle Precast Inc. of Croydon, Pa., was contracted by Tony DePaul & Son to design, engineer and manufacture custom precast concrete pipe and fittings to replace the proposed junction chamber which helped keep the work safe, on schedule and on budget as part of a $30 million project to reconstruct Interstate 95 at the Cottman Avenue interchange in northeast Philadelphia.

New water, sewer and gas mains are mostly in place beneath Cottman Avenue and workers are continuing work on the first of two phases in the Cottman Avenue interstate improvement plan. The project involves building two new highway ramps, replacing sewer lines and relocating water and gas lines as work is done on the roadways and improving surface roads—including two one-way roads that became two-way—to divert traffic away from residential areas and improve access to I-95.

Oldcastle Precast manufactured 1,154 linear ft of precast pipe for the new sewer line—352 linear ft of 48-in. pipe, 472 linear ft of 54-in. pipe and 330 linear ft of 84-in. precast concrete pipe. In addition, Oldcastle Precast worked with DePaul to produce special precast concrete fittings for the sewer line. Their challenges included an 84-in. bend, 84-in.-by-54-in. wye fittings and two 84-in.-by-15-in. fittings. The custom precast fittings for the sewer line eliminated the need for a poured-in-place concrete junction chamber, allowing the work to get done quickly. All pipe and fittings were installed by Nello Construction Co., a subcontractor of Tony DePaul & Son.

Financed with 90% federal and 10% state funds, the crews currently are working on the $31.9 million Interstate 95 Cottman/Princeton Ramp Project and expect to complete phase one work in August 2011. Tony DePaul & Son of Blue Bell, Pa., is the general contractor for the project.
