Study is needed before city can build new wastewater treatment plant

RJN Group Inc. currently is conducting a 9.5 month Inflow/Infiltration (I/I) Investigation for the city of Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The city is planning to build a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). As part of the permitting requirements and a consent decree with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, it needs to investigate its collection system to reduce flows to the WWTP.

The I/I investigation is a Phase I study to determine where the city should concentrate future investigations of its collection system. RJN will install and manage approximately 20 flow meters and four rain gauges to collect flow data. The data will then be used to calibrate a model of the collection system. Forty percent of the city’s 917 manholes will be analyzed by GPS to verify the accuracy of its maps. RJN also will evaluate the capacity of the city’s lift station. Once the Phase I study is complete, a report with the findings and recommendations will be prepared for the city.
