Senator Announces USDA Funds for Water Management Project in Ohio

Funds will go towards improving water service and treatment facilities

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown announced $2,540,470 in funds for water management projects in Allen County, Ohio. The funds will be distributed through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program, and will be used to expand water service and wastewater treatment facilities in the village of Cairo.

"All Ohioans deserve access to clean water, but too many communities are struggling to afford costly, but necessary, upgrades to sewer systems," Brown said. "By helping communities upgrade outdated water and sewer systems, we can attract new businesses to our state and ensure Ohioans pay less for their water and sewer bills."

The funding consists of a $1,619,000 loan and a $701,800 grant to build a new water distribution system for 250 users in Cairo.

Brown, along with Senator George V. Voinovich, authored the Clean Water Affordability Act in April 2009. The legislation aims to update the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) clean water affordability policy to provide for a full and accurate representation of the financial impacts clean water investment programs place on communities struggling to meet federal regulations for improving water infrastructure.
