Indiana Awards Grants to Seven Treatment Plants

Dec. 6, 2010
Funding will go towards improving plants' energy efficiency

Indiana Lt. Governor Becky Skillman announced that seven communities were awarded grants to improve the energy efficiency of their water treatment facilities. The grants are part of the Energy Efficiency for Water Treatment (EEWT) grant program, which offers up to $100,000 for the replacement of water or wastewater treatment pumps and motors. The $350,000 program was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s State Energy Program and administered by the Indiana Office of Energy Development.

Increasing the energy efficiency in these water and wastewater treatment plants will have a positive impact the cost of running them. The cost of the upgrades should be paid for within six years.

“Water and wastewater treatment facilities consume lots of energy, and there is great opportunity for savings,” said Skillman. “These grants will lower energy bills, freeing up more money for local budgets.”

The EEWT grants have been awarded to:

• Batesville, Franklin County, $17,577; • Boonville, Warrick County, $29,412; • Kokomo, Howard County, $61,036; • Monticello, White County, $43,000; • Rensselaer, Jasper County, $100,000; • Noblesville, Hamilton County, $26,690; and • Brownsburg, Hendricks County, $72,285.

All of the grants will be used to replace or upgrade existing pumps, motors and/or controls. The EEWT grant program was a competitive grant program open to government-owned water and wastewater treatment facilities in Indiana. Grantees will provide at least a 50% cost match.
