American Water Works Co. Inc. announced that its Environmental Management Corp. (EMC) subsidiary received three awards from the Indiana Water Environment Assn. (IWEA). The awards, which recognize EMC for plant safety and laboratory excellence in its operation of the city of New Albany wastewater treatment facility, were received at the IWEA conference in Indianapolis.
The awards are the Water Environment Assn.’s 2010 George W. Burke Jr. Award for Safety, the IWEA Safety Award and the IWEA Laboratory Excellence Award. The awards ceremony marked the tenth consecutive year EMC has won the IWEA Safety Award for the New Albany facility.
“We are honored to receive these three distinguished awards,” said Adam R. McDonough, American Water’s president of contract operations. “Our New Albany team continues to demonstrate its commitment to achieving a 100% safe workplace and providing operational excellence to the City of New Albany.”
The Burke award is given annually by the Water Environment Assn. to just one municipal or industrial wastewater facility in each state for promoting an active and effective safety program. EMC has won the Burke award a total of 12 times in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. This is the first time EMC has won this award for its operation of the New Albany facility.
The IWEA Laboratory Excellence Award recognizes an Indiana wastewater treatment facility that achieves a 90% total score in quality assurance, lab facility, general lab and specific procedures. The New Albany plant scored a minimum of 85% in each of these categories. EMC has garnered this award eight times in the past 10 years.
