Pons brings over 21 years of experience to the position

SCS Engineers announced that Gary Pons, CIH, CSP, REA I, was appointed corporate health and safety director. Pons has over 21 years of safety and environmental program management experience in the private and public sectors, including the construction, utility and wastewater collection/treatment industries.

Pons comes to SCS from the Liberty Mutual Group, Commercial Markets Division, where he was a technical loss control consultant. In that position, Pons provided comprehensive loss control services for multi-million dollar commercial business accounts. His most recent assignment before joining SCS involved the company-wide implementation of a comprehensive behavior-based safety program for a multi-billion dollar organization. This entailed collaboration with staff at all levels of the organization to effectively implement the various functional components and to track the program’s effectiveness.

For more than 16 years, Pons applied his health and safety expertise at three large public organizations: California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). At CSULB and LAUSD, his responsibilities included environmental health and safety (EH&S) program management related to the operations and maintenance of employer-owned methane monitoring and electrical distribution/transmission systems. At OCSD, Gary coordinated the safety management efforts of the organization’s two central generation plants. These facilities function as the primary electrical power sources for operating OCSD’s wastewater treatment process by converting digester gas into electrical energy. At each of these organizations, Gary was also responsible for managing all construction safety activities. This included all EH&S activities for large (over $100 million) civil and public works projects.

Pons earned a Bachelor’s degree in biological science from California State University, Fullerton. He is also a diplomat of the Academy of Industrial Hygiene and a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers.
