Operations Challenge Competition Brings Wastewater Treatment to the Surface

Oct. 5, 2010
Twenty-third annual competition to take place during WEFTEC

More than 200 wastewater treatment professionals will compete in Operations Challenge 2010, a fast-paced skills competition for wastewater operations and maintenance professionals. Now in its 23rd year, the event will take place Oct. 4 to 5, 2010, at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center.

Growing from an original 22-team event to this year’s 37-team, two-division format, each four-member team will be judged on the best combination of precision, speed and safety. Winners are determined by a weighted point system for five events including collection systems, laboratory, process control, maintenance and safety. The events are designed to test the diverse skills required for the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities, their collection systems and laboratories--all vital to the protection of public health and the environment.

For the second year, the Water Environment Assn. of Texas' Trinity River Authority CReWSers will defend their title against the top regional teams from the United States, Canada and Argentina. In addition, this year’s event will feature new laboratory and maintenance events. The laboratory event will require teams to complete a membrane filtration analysis using the Hach (Loveland, Colo.) m-ColiBlue24 method and in the Wilo (Melrose Park, Ill.) maintenance event where teams will simultaneously prepare a submersible pump and submersible mixer for service.

Operations Challenge is presented in conjunction with WEFTEC.10. As the largest annual water quality conference and exhibition in the world, this year’s event will host thousands of water professionals and exhibitors from around the world and feature the latest in research, training, solutions and cutting-edge technologies.
