BiOWiSH Technologies Inc. has appointed John Norton as senior executive vice president, global wastewater. He takes over the position from Klaus Voss, who will assume the role of chief operations officer. Norton will lead the Chicago-based clean technology company’s expansion into the global wastewater industry, particularly in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Australia.
Before joining the company, Norton was the North American renewable energy practice lead and senior consulting engineer for Montgomery Watson Harza (MWH), a global wet infrastructure firm. He led MWH’s corporate initiatives to integrate sustainable approaches into the planning and design of infrastructure systems.
Norton has authored more than 45 papers and reports focusing on the financial and technical assessment of urban water systems, efficiency/benchmarking assessment and alternative waste and potable water technologies. He also was cited in two urban water system reports to the United States Congress. Norton currently serves as editor of the International Water Association Journal of Water and Climate Change.
Norton has a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering and a postdoctoral doctoral fellowship from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Prior to earning his Ph.D., he also earned MSE degrees in geotechnical engineering and in industrial and operations engineering from the same university. He earned his master’s in environmental engineering and a bachelor’s in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
Norton’s academic accomplishments are complemented with real-life applications in water technology. In addition to helping write the UK Water Industry Research Carbon Accounting Standards, Norton was the technical lead on the project, integrating these standards into the Thames Water utility business management system. He was the technical and financial lead for the team delivering the Strategic Energy Study and Implementation Plan for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the largest water utility in the world. He also was the lead technical reviewer for the San Francisco Public Utility Commission’s storm water design guidelines, and the technical lead for the City of Chicago’s renewable energy and carbon management planning and implementation effort.
