Event to commemorate Earth Day

To commemorate the 40th annual Earth Day, the city of Edina, Minn., will plant trees at Pamela Park, 4301 W. 58th St., 10 a.m. on April 30.

The public is invited to attend to help or observe the tree planting, which will take place on the west end of the park along the parking lot on Oaklawn Avenue. The city forester will be available to respond to any questions or comments regarding tree care practices or discuss any issues relating to the operations of the city's tree program. If weather or other conditions arise that would cause a cancellation of the event, it will be held in May.

“Tree planting and proper care of trees are vitally important aspects of environmental stewardship locally and globally,” said City Forester Tom Horwath. “Trees provide not only aesthetic benefits, but also necessary environmental functions and important resources. So, whether you attend or not, be thankful for all trees and all that they have to offer for us, beginning with the air we breathe.”

Dow Water & Process Solutions provided a sponsorship and is providing nearly 30 employee volunteers to help with the tree planting. Volunteers will also help clean the park during the event as part of Keep America Beautiful’s 2010 Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest annual community improvement program. Dow is a national sponsor of the 2010 Great American Cleanup.

“Dow’s partnership with the Edina community and participation in the Great American Cleanup underscores our commitment to being an active community partner and environmental steward,” said Tom Bass, site leader of Dow Water & Process Solutions. “This project also speaks to the power and engagement of our employees--our human element--as well as other volunteers throughout the community to make our community a cleaner and more sustainable place to live.”
