Award ceremony was held during PACE 2010 in Phoenix

The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) presented the Annual Coating Education Award to Robert Murphy and Larry Pack of the Sherwin-Williams Co. The award ceremony was held during PACE 2010 in Phoenix.

Pack and Murphy were recognized for their efforts to launch an SSPC career path for the concrete coatings industry. The award promotes the efforts of those who significantly advance the body of knowledge needed for success in the field of protective coatings and their application.

The career path is two-pronged:
• A Concrete Coatings Basics (C-10) course for the novice worker provides basic training for contractors; it is also a prerequisite for individuals seeking to obtain Concrete Coating Inspector certification. The course is an overview of concrete components, coating and surfacing types, surface preparation and substrate repair techniques based on SSPC consensus standard TU-10, Procedures for Applying Thick Film Coatings and Surfacings Over Concrete Floors. Pack, who is technical services manager – East, for Sherwin-Williams, authored this course; and
• A three-day Concrete Coatings Inspector training and certification program (C-11) trains individuals in the proper methods of inspecting surface preparation and installation of industrial protective coatings on concrete industrial structures and facilities. Murphy, who is currently business development manager for water & wastewater for Sherwin-Williams, assisted in authoring this course.

SSPC training programs have provided more than 35,000 coatings professionals with the opportunity to maintain and expand their knowledge of coatings technology, standards and practices.
