American Water, a U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced that John Young, president of American Water Services and American Water Works Service Co., and Dr. Mark LeChevallier, director of innovation and environmental stewardship, will participate in two upcoming water reuse conferences.
LeChevallier will participate in a panel discussion on the regulation of reclaimed water during the National Research Council’s fifth meeting of the Committee on Assessment of Water Reuse as an Approach for Meeting Future Water Supply Needs. The meeting will take place on Jan. 25 in Washington. Other panelists include Peter Silva, assistant administrator of the Office of Water, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Kira Finkler, deputy commissioner for external and intergovernmental affairs, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, as well as representatives from the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Congressional Research Service.
On Feb. 3 and 4, both LeChevallier and Young will participate in the University of North Carolina’s water reuse workshop, “Extending the Nation’s Water Supply: Overcoming Barriers to Innovative Water Infrastructures,” in Chapel Hill, N.C. LeChevallier will deliver a presentation titled “Changing the Paradigm for Water Reuse,” during which he will share American Water's approach to distributed treatment of reclaimed water.
Young and LeChevallier will join other industry experts in attendance from universities, engineering firms, water utilities, the EPA and the WateReuse Assn. to discuss the role of water reuse from wastewater, rooftop rainwater capture and storm water recovery to attain the goal of a sustainable water infrastructure. This workshop is supported by the EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Water Supply and Water Resources Div.
