Bottled Water Regulation, Safety Touted in YouTube Video

IBWA defends against critics of bottled water in new video

To provide consumers with information about the regulation and safety of bottled water and tap water, the International Bottled Water Assn.’s (IBWA) consumer website, www.bottledwatermatters.com, released a new, two-and-a-half minute YouTube video titled, “How Safe is Bottled Water?” that highlights the key similarities and differences between bottled water and tap water regulations.

“We are hearing misinformation about the regulation and safety of bottled water, and we produced this video to set the record straight,” said Tom Lauria, IBWA’s vice president of communications. “Activists want you to think that bottled water is not as regulated as tap water, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, bottled water is one of the most stringently regulated of all foods and beverages on U.S. shelves.”

In the video, a teenager checks the facts out for herself and then spells out the similarities and differences between the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) bottled water regulations and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulations for tap water. By law, the FDA must be as protective of public health as tap water standards, IBWA said. The teenager concludes by directing people to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website.

IBWA said bottled water is a safe, healthy and convenient food product that is comprehensively regulated by the FDA. In addition, the IBWA has a Code of Practice.
