Coca-Cola, Pepsi Named Beijing's Top Water Polluters

Sept. 21, 2009
Companies, along with 25 other entities, will face increased supervision

Beijing’s city government has announced that the Coca-Cola and PepsiCo plants have been listed as among the top 12 factories causing major water pollution in China's capital, the Global Times reported.

The Beijing Development and Reform Commission, the city's economic planning agency, published the list along with the top 15 energy users in the capital.

China’s goal of reducing average energy consumption by 20% from 2006 to 2010 means it has to cut average consumption by 4% each year over the five-year period. The average energy consumption fell 4.59% last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The commission said the 27 entities will face increased supervision and must submit plans to reduce energy use and pollution emissions.

Top energy users in Beijing included Capital Iron and Steel Corp. and the American chemical company Praxair.
