Shane Keaney, president of Bord na Mona Environmental Products U.S., Inc. was one of 60 industry leaders who participated in the First Annual Decentralized Water/Wastewater Reuse for Clean, Green and Smart Development in Rural and Urban Communities Workshop, July 26 to 29 in Nags Head, N.C. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University along with North Carolina Cooperative Extension, including their Dare County Center, organized the workshop.

A substantial number of new technologies have come into the water and wastewater marketplace in the past 15 to 20 years, including decentralized water and wastewater reuse systems. In this three-day workshop, community leaders, health officials, soil scientists, engineers and governmental decision makers from the U.S. and Canada learned how to select decentralized water/wastewater reuse options and understand their management and business case requirements.

Keaney spoke to the attendees at the workshop on single-family home and small community reuse technologies. He joined some of the most noted professionals in the field of decentralized water and wastewater reuse technologies, including senior research biologists, professors, public health officials and industry leaders who gathered for this groundbreaking workshop.

Dr. Mike Hoover, workshop director and professor of soil science from North Carolina State University, remarked, “The success of this workshop will be seen in the continued and accelerated adoption of reuse water and wastewater to both improve our environment and protect our fresh water supply. I am confident that the results of this workshop will have a positive impact for many people.”
