Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global leader in drinking water quality and safety, recently announced it participated in a U.S Department of Commerce digital video conference July 30 to discuss water quality and safety issues in India. The conference is part of an ongoing series of digital video conferences aimed to develop commercial relations between the U.S. and India through industry-specific technical dialogues.

The forum, organized by UL, focused on regulatory developments, safe drinking water standards and the existence of conformity assessment capabilities to improve India’s’ drinking water quality and safety.

“With increased pressures to manage human and industrial water properly, India is seeking counsel to help safeguard its water supply,” said Dr. T.N.V.V. Rao, regional business development manager for UL and conference speaker. “UL is working with government and industry stakeholders in India to address the country’s drinking water quality issues. Dialogues like the one the Department of Commerce is hosting are essential to leveraging the benefits of conformity assessment for the Indian water market.”

Key stakeholders from the U.S. and India were invited to help lead the safety discussion. Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, National Accreditation Board of Laboratories, Planning Commission of India, Bureau of Indian Standards, Quality Council of India and Confederation of Indian Industries joined Dr. Rao at the conference.

“Water is critical to preservation of life, yet more than one billion people lack access to clean, safe drinking water,” said Jeffrey Smith, general manager, UL Global Water Business. “As a growing global leader in the industry, UL continues to work with its partners in the U.S. and abroad to help solve the world’s water issues.”
