Evaluation of Alternatives to Domestic Ion Exchange Water Softeners (WRF-08-06)
This project will assess alternative domestic water treatment devices that are designed to remove hardness from domestic drinking water. This project will compare the treatment efficacy, energy use, chemical consumption, water use, waste by-product generation, maintenance requirements, life cycle, and cost of alternative domestic water treatment devices. The overall objective of this project is to analyze technologies that can provide the benefits of soft water for domestic use while reducing salinity delivered to municipal wastewater treatment plants and in turn passed on to recycled water users.

Disinfection Guidelines for Satellite Water Recycling Facilities (WRF-08-07)
The objective of this project is to produce disinfection guidelines for satellite water recycling facilities that provide uniform public health protection and yet take advantage of superior treatment and reliability where it is available. The principle benefit will be greater proliferation of recycling through the use of satellite systems because these guidelines can be used by designers and regulators to develop more efficient systems.
