Aqueduct Shutdown Prompts Vallecitos Water District to Ask for Additional Conservation

Jan. 30, 2009
Customers asked to increase conservation measures Feb. 8 through Feb, 17, 2009

Due to a regional aqueduct shutdown being conducted by the San Diego County Water Authority, the wholesale agency responsible for transporting water into the Vallecitos Water District (VWD) water distribution system, customers are being asked to increase conservation measures from Feb. 8 through Feb. 17, 2009. Additional conservation will help ensure adequate water supplies during this temporary supply disruption.

The shutdown will allow the San Diego County Water Authority to perform routine maintenance on its pipes, helping to ensure reliable water deliveries to VWD’s 80,000 customers in San Marcos, Lake San Marcos, Carlsbad, Escondido, Vista and other unincorporated surrounding areas.

Customers can assist by:
• Turning off irrigation controllers for the shutdown duration. As outside irrigation accounts for approximately 90 percent of VWD’s daily water use, the value of complying with this request cannot be understated. The task is easily accomplished by clicking your irrigation dial to “off.”
• Avoiding all nonessential water use—especially outdoor use. This includes clearing your walkway with your water hose, washing your car and filling swimming pools or hot tubs.
• Running only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher. Also, take shorter showers and do not use your toilet as a wastebasket.
