Grants are available through the Five Star Restoration Program, which brings together citizen groups, corporations, youth organizations, landowners and government agencies to undertake projects that restore streams and wetlands. The application deadline for the 2009 grants is Feb. 16, 2009.
A national webinar for interested applicants will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. (CST) Dec.12. This webinar will provide information about the new online application system, as well as guidance on how to prepare competitive applications. EPA Region 7 Administrator John B. Askew said, "Wetlands and stream restoration partnership projects are some of the best tools for improving water quality in our watersheds. Partnerships are key ingredients to the success of these restoration projects."
The Five Star Restoration Program, administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, is a partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Association of Counties, the Wildlife Habitat Council and corporate partners Southern Co. and Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
In 2008, Five Star Restoration Program grants totaled $872,333. The grants were awarded to 35 community-based wetland and streamside habitat restoration projects. The grantees leveraged an additional $2 million in local project support.
