The San Diego City Council unanimously approved water conservation measures aimed at changing the habits of San Diego residential and business customers Nov. 10, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
The measures include year-round permanent prohibitions against water waste, as well as rules that would take effect if the region's water situation worsens, according to the newspaper. The plan also includes outdoor watering schedules, bans on using ornamental fountains and limiting new water connections.
The city Water Department is expected to submit details of a possible customer-by-customer water allocations strategy to the council within three months.
Water agencies countywide are encouraging voluntary conservation. Water leaders anticipate mandates in the area will be needed unless the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains receive heavy snowfall this winter, the newspaper reported.
