A bottled water study released Oct. 15 by Washington-based Environmental Working Group found a variety of contaminants often found in tap water, the Associated Press reported. The findings challenge the idea that bottled water is purer than tap water, according to the researchers.
All brands tested met federal health standards, but two violated a California standard.
The tests turned up bacteria and 38 chemicals including caffeine, the pain reliever acetaminophen, fertilizer, solvents, plastic ingredients and the radioactive element strontium.
The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) called the findings "alarmist," according to the AP.
