California Governer Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed California Assembly Bill 2270, which would have given unelected water boards the power to decide whether towns could ban water softeners.
“Increasing the use of recycled water in the state is an absolutely necessary activity to increase water supply reliability for the future of our growing state,’ Schwarzenegger wrote in a letter to legislators explaining the veto. “Unfortunately, this bill also includes provisions that go too far in limiting residential use of water softeners.”
Schwarzenegger went on to explain that the current law includes provisions that allow local agencies to regulate softeners, and the provisions of the proposed AB 2270 would have limited choices for consumers while resulting in “potentially little positive impact given the relatively limited contribution of water softeners to our salinity problems.”
