Koch Membrane Systems to Increase RO Element Production Capacity

Production at Koch's Wilmington, Mass., facility will more than double

Koch Membrane Systems, Inc., has announced its investment in a new production line at its Wilmington, Mass., facility that will more than double manufacturing capacity for its reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) elements. According to David H. Koch, company president, “The new production capability is required to meet the increasing market demand for RO membranes and systems, including the 18-in.-diameter x 61-in.-long MegaMagnum element.”

The planned production line will supplement the existing RO element production lines at the company’s manufacturing facility in San Diego, Calif., and is scheduled to be fully operational in mid-2009.

The MegaMagnum element, the world’s largest spiral-wound RO element, is becoming the standard for large-scale industrial and municipal RO and NF applications. Applications include brackish water desalination, removal of inorganic contaminates (e.g., nitrates, arsenic and radium), softening, organic removal, water reuse, high-quality process water production and wastewater recycling. Each MegaMagnum element has between seven and eight times the effective membrane area of a conventional 8-in.-diameter x 40-in.-long element.

Compared to racks with standard 8-in. elements, racks of MegaMagnum elements require only half of the floor space and use one-fifth the number of connections and O-rings, reducing the cost, footprint and installation time of water treatment systems.
