Three Water Quality Professionals Receive Top Award

Oct. 16, 2007

Donald Gray, John Hake and Sambhunath Ghosh received the prestigious Eddy Wastewater Principles or Processes Medal from the Water Environment Federation (WEF).

Gray, Hake and Ghosh are being recognized for their article, "Influence of Staging, Mean Cell Residence Time, and Thermophilic Temperature on the Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion Process," which was published in the May 2006 issue of Water Environment Research. It introduces methods, analysis and models used for selecting a particular thermophilic digestion process. The methods and tools the authors describe are expected to spur additional research and improvements for achieve Class A biosolids. The authors also developed an empirical model to help predict the best performing thermophilic temperature and mean cell residence time.

The Eddy Medal honors Harrison Prescott Eddy, a prominent engineer and a pioneer in the wastewater treatment field. The medal is awarded for research that makes a vital contribution to the existing knowledge of the fundamental principles or processes of wastewater treatment, as comprehensively described and published in a WEF periodical.

"This award not only recognizes the excellence and contribution of noted individuals but of a whole community of public health and environmental professionals," said Bill Bertera, WEF executive director.
