RABAT,, MOROCCO--Water levels in Morocco's
reservoirs have fallen to nearly 48 percent of capacity, compared with over 56
percent a year ago, official figures showed on Wednesday. The state-run Water Engineering Directorate
said that on January 17 the North African country's reservoirs held 6.7 billion
cubic metres of water, compared with their total capacity of 13.9 billion cubic
metres.Officials have attributed the shortage to
last year's drought, which hit the important agriculture sector. But the country
has registered good rainfalls this season.Morocco has some 60 dams, which irrigate
around a sixth of its 5.6 million hectares of arable land.SOURCE: Reuters
