The National Academy of Sciences will review government standards associated with sewage sludge and offer recommendations toward for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's sludge program.
The EPA requires that both water leaving the plant, as well as the sludge wastes, meet health and environmental standards. The review by the NAS will ensure that such standards are based on the best and most current science possible, and that sludge management policies are responsive to that science. Results of the study will help ensure the protection of public health and the environment in land applications of sewage sludge.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control - National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has agreed to work with EPA and NAS on the review.
