Company Fined for Pumping Contaminated Water to Farms

Dec. 28, 2000

According to The Arizona Republic, the state of Arizona has fined a water company $10,900 for "major deficiencies" and violating 25 laws governing public water systems.

Johnson Utilities, which serves 3,200-acre Johnson Ranch and 544-acre Sun Valley Farms Unit V, both south of Queen Creek, supplied water that contained nitrates and coliform bacteria exceeding state standards, said the state Department of Environmental Quality.

The utility also was fined for failing to take monitoring samples, perform back-flow prevention testing and submit a required emergency operations plan for Johnson Ranch. In addition, it operated a new well without approval at the Ranch and failed to notify both farms of its violations.

Since the DEQ's notice of violations last December, the utility has completed the required corrective actions, and both farms have water systems that are in compliance with safe drinking water standards.
