Brita Sponsors Shoreline Clean Up Effort

Dec. 28, 2000

For the fourth consecutive year, Brita is sponsoring the Center for Marine Conservation's International Coastal Cleanup – the nation's largest volunteer effort to clean up oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams on behalf of the marine environment.

On Saturday September 16, more than three-quarters of a million people will descend on beaches all over the world to help tackle the problem of marine debris. Last year, more than 774,000 volunteers from almost every state and six continents collected more than 8.4 million pounds of cigarette butts, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and other debris.

"We are extremely proud to be part of a cleanup effort that focuses on water, one of our most important resources," said Scott Weiss, president of The Brita Products Company.

As an official sponsor of the International Coastal Cleanup, The Brita Products Company is thanking volunteers by giving each a coupon redeemable for a free Brita Fill & Go Water Filtration Bottle and $10 off any Brita pitcher, dispenser, or faucet filter system, as a way of thanking them.

Data compiled from the International Coastal Cleanup is used to effect positive change in individual and corporate practices and

governmental policy, to reduce marine debris and encourage marine conservation.

"We couldn't do the International Coastal Cleanup without our sponsors like Brita," said Roger Rufe, president of CMC. "Each year our sponsors provide us with the necessary means and supplies to ensure that our volunteers can go out and make their oceans and waterways cleaner and safer for people

and wildlife."

Local cleanups are scheduled at thousands of sites across the country. People interested in volunteering for a local cleanup may call 1-800-CMC-BEACH for further details.
