CH2M HILL Promotes Water Quality Education Through World Water Monitoring Day

Sept. 20, 2007

CH2M HILL is supporting World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) by engaging in outreach activities across the country to foster public understanding of the importance of water quality.

Though it officially kicked off with a national event in Washington D.C. on 18 September, WWMD encourages community groups to monitor water bodies throughout the month.

"We know first-hand the importance of clean water to people all over the world," said Tom Searle, CH2M HILL's water business group president. "Each year, our employees partner with clients, community groups, and local officials to take part in World Water Monitoring Day."

CH2M HILL employees are celebrating WWMD through a variety of outreach events, including school presentations and monitoring events at local rivers, lakes, and other water. The firm hopes to have employees from 60 offices globally participate in the program, involving a total of 2,000 participants and collecting at least 800 water samples. Additionally, CH2M HILL produced the promotional and educational DVD for WEF to help students and community groups understand the water monitoring process.

World Water Monitoring Day, coordinated by the Water Environment Federation, is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of local water bodies. Participants are asked to conduct testing on four basic characteristics of water quality, including pH, temperature, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. Participation continues to grow toward the organization's goal of one million volunteers by the year 2012.
