Drinking Water for Algeria

Oct. 2, 2007

The KSB Group was asked by a Canadian plant engineer to supply a pumping station, which would supply the city of Algiers and the province of Tizi Ouzou Kabylie with drinking water. The order is worth close to 5 million euros. The end customer is the national Water Utility Authority of Algeria, ANBT.

The delivery included a pumping station with six RDLO 700-980 pump sets and various valves, surge vessels and matching control systems. Each of the pumps is designed for a discharge head of 60 metres and is driven by a 1.350 kW three-phase motor. With all five main units running at the same time, the plant reaches a flow rate of more than 7,000 litres per second.

The pumping station is located in the Algerian part of the Atlas mountains, in a place called Taksebt. An artificial lake of the same name stores about 100 million cubic metres of water, which is treated in the pumping station and then transported to the coastal area via two 100-kilometer pipes. The inflow into this lake fluctuates strongly, and so does the water level. This poses a true technical challenge for a pumping station.

KSB Belgium won the order for having successfully designed and selected pumping stations for the last 30 years. The pumping station started its normal operation in May this year.
