Several beaches along the Jersey Show were closed last weekend after authorities noticed medical waste and trash washing onto the shore.
Beachgoers reported seeing syringes, tampon applicators and gauze. The source of the waste is not known, and there have been no reported injuries. New York Daily News reported that most of the waste was found on beaches and water near Monmouth and Ocean counties.
The waves were first reported Sunday at about 2 pm. After the spotting, Normandy Beach in Ocean County was closed. Officials reported to New York Daily News that they are not sure when the beaches will reopen.
State environmental officials were notified and have begun the investigation to determine the source of the waste and the party responsible.
The affected towns fear that that the closures will affect the tourists that often visit the area in the summer months.
