American Water’s Applied Water Management Group has received New York City Department of Health certification for a state-of-the-art wastewater recycling system at Millennium Towers Residences, a 35-story high-rise apartment building in Battery Park City. The system meets all Battery Park City Authority’s pioneering Residential Environmental Guidelines and reduces the demand for potable water in the building by nearly half, providing a sustainable, long-term environmental advantage.
The state-of-the-art recycling system, located in the basement of the Millennium Towers Residences, reclaims wastewater and treats it to acceptable levels for a variety of non-potable uses including toilet flushing, park irrigation and HVAC cooling.
“It is our privilege to be part of such an exciting project that focuses on sustainable development,” said Don Correll, president and chief executive officer of American Water. “We have been designing and operating wastewater treatment systems for beneficial reuse in Battery Park City since Governor Pataki set out to transform the way residential buildings are constructed. This marks our third wastewater treatment plant that has received certification and meets the stringent New York City direct reuse standards.”
The company has designed and now operates two similar “green” wastewater recycling systems in residential high-rise buildings in Battery Park City: the Solaire and Tribeca Green. In addition, American Water’s Applied Water Management Group continues to provide services for new wastewater recycling systems at the River House and the Visionaire, two other residences located in Battery Park City.
When complete, the five systems together will capture close to 50 percent of the wastewater produced by the buildings, treat it and return it for non-potable use. The systems range in size from 14,000 gallons per day to 30,000 gallons per day.
American Water partnered with the Battery Park City Authority and developers on the system concept and then designed it and managed construction. The company now performs operation services for the individual building owners.
