Southern Australia Commits to $60 Million Wastewater Plan

Aug. 22, 2007

Southern Australia’s Premier Mike Rann has announced that the state government has agreed to pay half of the construction costs of a 30km pipeline network that will carry treated recycled water from the Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant to the city of Adelaide.

The project is called the Glenelg Reuse Scheme, and more than 5.5 billion liters of water will be pumped into a network of pipes to be laid under the Adelaide central business that will be used in parks, the river and commercially.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the federal government offered to pay half of costs during the 2004 election campaign.

Rann stated that construction could start as soon as next year if the commonwealth money was made available and the pipelines could be online by late 2010.
