AWWA Seminar Helps Utilities Weather Disasters

Water utility managers, emergency planners and others will gather Aug. 15-16 in Alexandria, Va., to discuss how to weather the impacts of natural or manmade disasters.

Hosted by the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the two-day seminar, titled "Business Continuity Planning for Water & Wastewater Utilities: How to Keep Your Utility in Business and Operating in Times of Crisis," covers "business continuity plans," which define how a utility will continue to operate through a crisis beyond first emergency response. Each year, utilities face the personnel impacts and financial effects from power outages, computer failures, disease outbreak, floods, ice storms and other unforeseen situations. The seminar, led by Linda Warren, Director of Preparedness Solutions at CH2M Hill, and Jack Moyer, Emergency Manager Director of URS Corporation, is designed to identify essential functions and critical resources that keep a utility running through crisis scenarios.

The seminar begins with a national security update from Alan Roberson, AWWA director of Security and Regulatory Affairs. Warren and Moyer will define business continuity planning, provide case studies and lead seminar participants through hands-on exercises.
