The Maui County wastewater treatment division was awarded the annual Pisces Award for best Hawaii Clean Water State Revolving Fund Project of 2006.
The $3.3 million project replaced force main sewage lines that dated back to 1948 and 1965. Dave Taylor, head of Wastewater Reclamation Division in the Department of Public Works and Environmental Management, told Maui News that the county also moved the main farther from the ocean when doing repairs.
The Pisces Award is presented by the EPA and the state Health Department. The Health Department has a revolving loan fund to pay for capitol projects.
Maui News reports that the Hawaii fund has given out more than $250 million of state and EPA funds, which are then replenished by the borrowers and lent out for other projects.
