Jerry M. Brownstein from the U.S. won the water category of the European Parliament’s Energy Globe Award 2007. Brownstein was awarded for developing wastewater treatment using water filters made of recycled plastics that cleans water to the point where it can be consumed.
The Energy Globe Award rewards outstanding projects in the field of energy efficiency in the categories of earth, fire, water, air and youth. John Maina from Kenya was awarded as the overall winner for pioneering ways of increasing harvest of small farmers by using 50 percent solar power.
The filter that earned Brownstein the water award can absorb up to 100% of oil contained in polluted water. The award was presented by violinist Nigel Kennedy.
