The city of Salisbury, Md., has agreed to a $50,000 fine from the Maryland Department of the Environment for improperly discharging and maintaining sewage sludge from its wastewater treatment plant.
The Daily Times reported that the plant is being charged for violating state laws regulating discharge and maintenance of sewage sludge, or biosolids. The city also did not submit material changes in regards to the placement of the sludge.
Salisbury must pay at least $10,000, remove all sewage sludge and properly dispose of the sludge by July 20, 2007. The city has until April to create a plan for disposing of its synthetic liner.
If the city complies early, the rest of the $50,000 will not need to be paid. However, if the city does not comply, then a $100 fee will be added daily.
