The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently responded to a report of a chemical spill at Isochem in Lockport, N.Y.
The company formerly known as VanderMark reported a spill of 10 liters of chlorobenzene, a chemical used as a solvent that could be potentially harmful.
Meaghan Boice-Green, a spokesperson for the DEC, told the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal that the spill happened because of an equipment failure. During one of the processes, the chlorobenzene was diverted the wrong way and sent to the wastewater treatment system.
Isochem called the DEC and then notified the city of Lockport. The city tested the wastewater treatment plant and did not detect any traces of the chemical.
The on-site wastewater system at Isochem will now be flushed by an outside company and the materials will be tested.
The Lockport Union-Sun & Journal stated that this spill was the first in the state of New York to be reported to the public through a new system put into place last month. All hazardous chemical spills meeting a certain amount must be reported through the DEC.
