Approximately 14,000 gallons of untreated wastewater recently spilled out of the Kailua Wastewater Treatment Plant in Honolulu.
According to The Honolulu Advertiser, the spill flowed onto the plant’s driveway and into a drainage system on the grounds of the plant.
The spill was then contained within the plant grounds. The affected area was disinfected after the wastewater was removed.
The spill occurred after a new piece of equipment, known as a “bar screen”, clogged.
The city notified the state Department of Health and warning signs were posted along the plant perimeter in the vicinity of the drainage system.
