The Environmental Protection Agency awarded the wastewater treatment facility in Castleton, Vt., with a national first place award for small plant operations and excellence. Castleton was one of four plants recognized in New England.
According to The Rutland Herald, the award is given each year under the Clean Water Act. Ed Tracy, chief operator at Castleton, has been running the plant since 1993. Tracy’s assistant Richard Hodyl has been at the plant since before Tracy started. Both Tracy and Hodyl were mentioned by name in the notice sent out by the EPA.
The plant averages about 300,000 gallons of sewage a day and has a design capacity of 480,000. The plant uses a sequencing batch reactor system.
