Water Main Breaks in Boston’s Financial District

A 16-inch water main burst in Boston, emitting 1,000 gallons a minute of water into the financial district.

The water flooded office basements and caused the Club Quarters hotel to evacuate 150 rooms.

Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Finn told The Boston Herald that contractors had been working on the pipe the day before the break, but he is not sure if that is what caused the incident.

Fire crews evacuated the hotel after a wall collapsed in a nearby building. The guests were not allowed to return to the hotel that evening, but they were allowed to retrieve their belongings.

It took about an hour for the Boston Water and Sewer Commission to shut down the main.

No injuries were reported.
