Car Crash Causes Honolulu Sewage Spill

Aug. 15, 2006

2,500 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into the Hawai’i Kai Marina in Hawai’i Kai, Hawaii, after a card crashed into a temporary sewer bypass line.

Hawaii American Water, the private company that provides wastewater services for the area, warned customers to avoid contact with water in the marina. Warning signs will remain posted in the area until testing shows that the quality of the water has returned to normal.

According to The Honolulu AdvertiserMarina users are also asked to avoid skiing, swimming or any other activities in the water.

The unidentified vehicle hit a temporary sewer bypass line, and the untreated water entered the storm drain system and was later discharged into the marina. The bypass line was in place while Hawaii American Water upgraded its main sewer line in that area.
