City Sued Over Death at Wastewater Plant
The family of a worker who died after an explosion in a wastewater treatment plant in Daytona Beach, Fla., is suing the city.
Attorneys told Daytona Beach News-Journal that the family seeks over $5 million.
The wrongful death lawsuit states that the explosion occurred because Clyde Jones, 40, and his coworkers were not properly trained to work with dangerous chemicals and the necessary safety precautions were not taken.
Jones died the day after the blast that occurred at the Bethune Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. Maintenance supervisor Eric Johnson, 59, was killed instantly. Michael Martin, 43, survived the incident, but was left with serious burns.
The family lawyer, Chobee Ebbets, told Daytona Beach News-Journal that Jones’ family feels the city is responsible for the loss of his future earnings, as well as the pain and suffering.
The city has paid the workers’ compensation benefits and is not legally required to pay any additional money.
The blast is still being investigated by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board in Washington, D.C.
