Calgon Carbon Corp. has announced that it will be terminating 30 jobs in an effort to gain more profitability in its carbon filtration business.
Gail Gerono, a spokeswoman for the company, told Pittsburgh Business Times that the job cuts will be in sales and marketing, research and development, and business development. 20 of the cuts will occur in the Pittsburgh offices. Most of those being terminated have been informed.
Calgon Carbon hopes to save $3.3 annually as a result of eliminating the positions.
The company is facing problems due to legal costs in connection with efforts to seek a patent in a federal court in New Jersey. Calgon Carbon is fighting other companies that are challenging the patent for using ultraviolet light to prevent infection from cryptosporidium in drinking water. Using the light scrambles the DNA of the parasite, which in turn stops reproduction.
