Alion Awarded $2.8 Million Navy Contract for Water Purification Technology

March 28, 2006

Alion Science and Technology was awarded a $2.8 million cost plus, fixed fee contract from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Div.-Philadelphia (NSWCCD-Philadelphia) for the detailed design and fabrication of a second generation, high capacity, high purity water purification unit in support of the Office of Naval Research Expeditionary Unit Water Purification (EUWP) program.

Under the contract, Alion will act as the program manager for detailed design and fabrication of an advanced, high capacity, high purity water purification technology demonstrator scheduled for seawater desalination testing at Port Hueneme, Calif., in June 2007. Through project management and budget control, Alion will be responsible for all costs associated with the project and ensuring the demonstrator meets NSWCCD-Philadelphia performance goals and is delivered on time for testing.

The advanced water purification technology will reduce the power required to make potable and high purity water. It will also reduce operational and maintenance costs, reduce size and weight, and increase reliability and availability compared to current water purification systems. The demonstrator will also incorporate the latest technology advancements in water purification.

“After performing the conceptual design studies for the NSWCCD-Philadelphia on this water purification plant, we are looking forward to the opportunity to work as the program manager on the detailed design and fabrication of the demonstrator,” said Ken Siegman, Alion senior vice president.

Alion's team member, Village Marine Technology, will complete the detail design and fabrication of the plant. Work will be completed between February 2006 and June 2007. The work will be completed in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Gardena, Calif.
