New NSF/EPA Collaboration for Water Treatment System Testing

July 22, 2005

NSF International will be teaming up with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Bureau of Reclamation to test a water treatment system that could help provide water to areas with brackish or saltwater as their primary water source. The agreement was finalized on June 17, 2005.

The collaboration marks the first Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) testing of a desalinization water treatment system by NSF and The EPA ETV Program, a program that verifies the performance of innovative technologies. Areas benefiting from this type of treatment include areas in the southwest United States, ocean coastal regions and water scarce areas.

NSF will oversee the testing of the DoD’s Expeditionary Unit Water Purification (EUWP) by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to ensure compliance with the EPA’s ETV program requirements. These requirements include quality assurance and quality control of the testing, audits, data review and reports.

If you have questions regarding the new agreement, please contact Bruce Bartley, technical manager, NSF Federal Programs at 734 769-5148 or bartley @nsf.org.
