July 14, 2005

The National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation (NGWREF) has awarded a total of $7,000 to six students from its Len Assante Scholarship Fund.

Andrew Rieschick of Falls City, Neb., won the Past President’s Award--the top scholarship presented to the most qualified of the applicants. Rieschick, who is attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to study civil engineering, received $2,000 toward his education.

The other recipients are:

Arpita Shah of Jersey City, N.J.: $1,000 for the Ora Lyons Scholarship named in honor of a former distinguished National Ground Water Association member. Shah is attending Rutgers University to study medicine.

Spencer Grosch, O’Neill, Neb.: $1,000. Grosch is attending South Dakota State University to study mechanical engineering.

Reed Denning, Idaho Falls, Idaho: $1,000. Denning is attending Brigham Young University-Idaho to study business management.

Margarete Beth-Lockrem, Alameda, Calif.: $1,000. Lockrem is attending San Francisco State University to study environmental science, earth systems and hydrology.

James Brockett, Eastlake, Ohio: $1,000. Brockett is attending Case Western Reserve University to study biology and pre-medicine.

“Given the competitive environment for scholarships and the rising cost of higher education, our foundation is privileged to assist these students,” said NGWREF President Larry Lyons, MGWC. “It is our hope that with these scholarships, we have contributed to a brighter future for each one of them in their chosen field.”

The scholarships are available to high school graduates and students in college (four-year program and well drilling two-year Associate Degree programs). A 2.5 grade point average is required. Applications must be received prior to April 1 each year. To learn more, go to http://www.ngwa.org/about/auxsch.cfm .
